Proper Manners Concerning People with Kidney Disorders

Diet

Dining with people with kidney disorders
  • Peoplewith kidney disorders may require blood dialysis every two or three days. Foods rich in potassium can be fatal for these people. Fresh fruit and vegetables contain especially large amounts of potassium, so avoid serving such foods to people with kidney disorders. Potassium is also found in large quantities in meat, milk, red beans, chestnuts, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. However, potassium easily dissolves in water. So, soak these ingredients in water for a couple of hours and dispose of the water before cooking.
  • Foods with high sodium and moisture contents can worsen edema in kidney patients. Salty food must be avoided. Also, ice is better than water for quenching thirst. Recommend and serve ice if possible.
  • It is recommended that kidney patients take oral health supplements, such as vitamins and iron pills, after each meal to get the nutrients they may be missing from a typical diet.

Other matters of concern

Handling heavy objects might exert excessive pressure on the wrists, through which kidney patients receive blood dialyses. If possible, help them avoid such pressure by sharing heavy loads.

Physical exercise or playing might cause kidney patients pain in their wrists or abdomen, through which they receive blood dialyses as well. Therefore, avoid intensive recreational activities and exercise.

If kidney patients need to travel long distances, make sure someone accompanies them in case of emergency, and inquire in advance regarding the location of any dialysis stations near the destination.

Kidney patients tend to be either pasty or dark in complexion due to their blood circulation problems. The blood vessels on their wrists also tend to bulge due to repeated dialyses. Do not stare at or make fun of these visible signs of their disease.

Patients who have undergone kidney transplants have severely weakened immune systems. Therefore, they must avoid contact with anyone who might be carrying infectious diseases.

Kidney patients become tired easily due to repeated dialysis and other complications of their condition, such as diabetes and hypertension. Extended exertions, whether at work or in recreation, are to be avoided.
